3 Tips to Using Overlays in Your Design

BIB Blog Graphic (2).png

Today we are going to talk about three quick tips on why you should use overlays in your design

You are probably wondering what is an overlay?

An overlay is a shape over your design. Let’s say you have a design in the background, right?Let's say it's a set of mountains or something like that, and you put a shape over it like a circle or square or triangle or whatever you want it to be, and you give it a certain color. Let's say the color is going to be blue. All right? When you add transparency to that blue shape, let's call it a square to that blue square. You are creating an overlay over your design in the background.

There are more than three reasons, but i'm only going to share three of them with you today.

Tip 1: Transparency

You can play with the transparency of your shape. Obviously, the more transparency you give it, the more you will see through it, and the more the background will show through. The less transparency, the less you will be able to see through to your background. So, the more transparent it is, the more background you see. Therefore, when you're putting text over your overlay, and it's too transparent and too much of the background is showing through. Your text may not show up clearly. If you have a somewhat busy background, if you would like to change that, you would just need to increase the transparency level of the overlay shape that you're using so that it's a little less transparent and less of the background is showing through.

Tip 2: Design Character

You can play with the transparency of your shape. Obviously, the more transparency you give it, the more you will see through it, and the more the background will show through. The less transparency, the less you will be able to see through to your background. So, the more transparent it is, the more background you see. Therefore, when you're putting text over your overlay, and it's too transparent and too much of the background is showing through. Your text may not show up clearly. If you have a somewhat busy background, if you would like to change that, you would just need to increase the transparency level of the overlay shape that you're using so that it's a little less transparent and less of the background is showing through.

Tip 3: Audience Focus

Overlays are good for helping your audience to focus on a certain part of your design. So let's say you have an image of a man and your objective is to get the audience to focus on the man's shoes because that's what you're selling. You want them to focus on his shoes and put the overlay over the majority of the man's body, thereby leaving his shoes uncovered. OK? Thereby making the focus of the photo his shoes. So adding overlay to your images gives you that focus. It helps your audience to focus on where you want them to look as soon as they look at the image.
